Public Hospital Produces Hand Sanitizer

Written By: By Emmanuel Tophic Degleh

Kakata, Margibi County – The C.H Rennie hospital in Kakata, one of the medical facilities worst hit by the deadly Ebola virus, is gradually on a path of recovery as the hospital through the Swedish government has begun manufacturing alcohol based ‘hand sanitizer’ for used by workers of the hospital.

The hospital’s chemical laboratory Pharmacist Diana Dahn-Smith said since her training with the Swedish government in 2015 she developed the passion to explore her knowledge as a holder of a BSc degree in Chemistry by testing her laboratory skill. Dahn-Smith has produced over 300 bottles with a volume of 100 ml.

She pointed out that one of the major ingredients of the hand sanitizer include Ethanol as well as distilled water and other chemical ingredients.

The Margibi County based Pharmacist noted that the anti-bacterial sanitizer that is being locally produced is credited to be the World Health Organization standard but expressed her disappointment that the products are in limited quantity to supply others health facilities .

She lamented the high cost of chemicals although the ones being used for production were earlier made available by the Swedish government.

“Because of the limited amount of the chemicals we are producing it only for the use of the hospital medical staff but we hope to produce more so the other health facilities and the public if the resources are available,” She noted.

The C.H Rennie hospital up to date remains Margibi only public referral hospital struggling to remain afloat after being hit by the deadly Ebola virus losing  over 18 health workers.

Meanwhile, the hospital’s Chief administrator Raymond Cassel said the current administration is struggling to keep the facility up to date especially in meeting the medical needs of the public.

He noted that the hospital will shortly embark on the production of Oxygen to be used in the emergency rooms to resuscitate people under critical medical conditions.
