Claim
Legislature 2022 Budget is not US$65 million But Way Above US$40, claims Representative Rustonlyn Suacoco Dennis of District #4, Montserrado County
Rating Justification
Our team researched the claim made by Representative Rustonlyn Suacoco Dennis of District #4, Montserrado County and found it to be incorrect or half true.
US Ambassador Michael McCarthy, in a release issued on April 24, 2023, claimed that the Liberian legislature “allocated over US$ 65 million in 2022 for salaries and operations”.
But a review of the 2022 National Budget shows that US$ 64, 383, 290 was allocated to the Liberian legislature and not US$65 million as claimed by Ambassador McCarthy
However, Rep. Dennis, in her rebuttal to the US Ambassador, also claimed that Legislature budget for 2022 was “US$40 million plus”. This, we find to also be incorrect.
In reaching this conclusion we reviewed the 2022 National budget with special emphasis on the allocations made to the legislature, and found that representative Dennis was right that the amount allotted to the legislature in 2022 National Budget was not over US$65 million.
Rep. Dennis description of the allocation made to the legislature US$40 million plus is an under statement of the amount in the budget for the legislature. The allocation made to the legislature in the 2022 National Budget is a little over US$ 64.3 million.
Therefore, we conclude that Rep. Dennis is incorrect when she claimed that the 2022 Legislature budget is over US$40 million. The budget was not over US$65 million as claimed by the US Ambassador but it is way above US$40 million.
