Fact Check: Screenshot of Tweet Attributed to EJS About ‘Kigali Cleanness’ is Authentic

Monrovia – A screenshot  of a tweet attributed to former Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf is gaining traction on Facebook as several commenters share their reactions.

The screenshot was first shared via The Costa Show by one Political Duke, on Tuesday, July 18, 2023 on Facebook. The poster claims that the tweet was made by former President Liberian President.

According to the claim, the former President tweeted: “Being in Kigali reminds me of the cleanliness of the streets of Monrovia and surrounding townships during Mayor Mary Broh’s tenure.”

Local Voices Liberia Fact-checking desk authenticated this claim and found it to be authentic.

How did we arrive at this conclusion?

We reviewed the former President Johnson-Sirleaf Twitter page to establish whether she made the statement and found that the post/tweet was made by her.

Madam Johnson-Sirleaf made the tweet on July 18, 2023 at 1:59 pm. The tweet gained 46.8K views, 107 retweets, 13 quotes, and 587 likes up to the time this report was published.

The screenshot above was taken from the official page of Madam Johnson-Sirleaf.

Based on this, we conclude that the screenshot of the tweet published on Facebook about a comment made by former President Johnson-Sirleaf is authentic. The former Liberian leader did tweet that, “Being in Kigali reminds me of the cleanliness of the streets of Monrovia and surrounding townships during Mayor Mary Broh’s tenure.”
