Maryland County: Local Farmer Says Agriculture ‘Is The Way to Development’

Maryland County – A local farmer of Glofaken in electoral district three, Maryland County says agriculture is one of the best means of growing Liberia’s economy and promoting rural development.

David Saylee, 67, said if agriculture is prioritized “Liberians will not rely heavily on the government for everything”, adding that agriculture will reduce unemployment, starvation and high crime rate in the county.

Saylee, who is a former lawmaker of the 51^st legislature, said 37 acres of rubber, cocoa, pineapples, and palm, which he said provide jobs for almost 20 people.

He called on the government of Liberia to give support to farmers across the country.

The Maryland County-based farmer also expressed regrets in the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) for what he described as the imposition of tax on local farmers in the absence of government support to local farmers in the country.He said LRA visited his farmer in 2013 to demand real properties tax while in the process of cultivation.

Meanwhile, Saylee has cautioned people of the county to remain patriot during the 2107 elections.

He urged electorates to study the platforms of politicians and “suit it with their living situations and see if it will bring positive change to lives”.

He also encouraged Liberians to conduct free and fair elections in order to foster development in the country.
